It is natural to seek pleasure and avoid suffering. But few understand the secret of success in this venture. When a spiritual teacher beckons us toward bliss, the catch is that we must sacrifice that which craves bliss. Even worse is that the deepest form of sacrifice breeds a taste for more of itself. Join us for a discussion of whether genuine bliss and profound sacrifice could actually ever be different from one another, and of the road to both.

Rob Schmidt, Ph.D., has been spiritual director of Tayu Meditation Center (owner of Many Rivers) since the death of founder Robert Daniel Ennis in 1998. He received a Ph.D. in anthropology from UC Berkeley in 2001.

Stuart Goodnick has studied Tayu meditation since 1985, and has taught since 1993. Stuart is vice-president in a software startup, and plays the shakuhachi, the Japanese bamboo flute, and was one of co-founders of Many Rivers.
